Ruthie and Tamar's story

With a trembling heart and teary eyes, we share with you the incredible story of Ruthie and Tamar.

Ruthie is the oldest surviving cow to have lived on a dairy farm in Israel. Rescued at the incredible age of 13 years old, Ruthie endured a life of misery and confinement, and had no less than 11 calves ripped away from her, just moments after giving birth to them before being rescued by us. Tamar was found roaming all by herself, in the middle of nowhere. A newborn calf with her umbilical cord still hanging from her small belly, she was weak and dehydrated and was taken immediately to a local veterinary hospital. Luckily, Tamar recuperated quickly and not long after her being found, she was under loving care at Freedom Farm Sanctuary.

Tamar stole our hearts immediately, but what happened next brought us all to tears.
We introduced Ruthie to Tamar, who almost immediately began caring for Tamar as if she were her own offspring, grooming her and letting her suckle on her udders. Tamar in return found the warmth and comfort of a mother she was so lacking as a newborn.

It’s as though destiny brought Ruthie and Tamar together, both filling an important need for each other: Ruthie finally being given the opportunity to be the incredible mother that she is, and Tamar given the sense of safety and comfort needed for her to grow with confidence.
When we see them both together our hearts are filled with joy and gratitude.
