The reality of circus animals is starkly different from the glamorous image that they project. The animals featured in these shows have been forcefully taken from their families and natural habitats, and trained using vicious methods that include prodding, electric shocks, whipping, and the forcing of the animals to stand on burning coals. Because of the harsh housing and transportation conditions, the animals suffer from a host of physical and psychological injuries.<\/p>\n

The panicked herd had scattered, and he was left alone, huddled under his mother’s long trunk, begging her to get up. Her body was left lying on the ground, having been shot dead by hunters, her tusks stolen, her baby \u2013 only several weeks old \u2013 taken. His legs were tied but he refused to leave his mother. The poachers beat the frightened cub with clubs, and led him to a small enclosure located hours away from his familiar surroundings. At the center of the enclosure was a stake, to which a heavy metal chain was attached. His hind leg was tied to the chain, and the young elephant was left there — lonely, sad, and still desperately crying out to his mother. Thus began Ricardo\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

At the break of dawn a vehicle with a small trailer arrived. Ricardo was released from the chain and led to the trailer, all the while being severely beaten and prodded. After a long and arduous road, he was brought to a large dirt yard, hosting a number of small cages holding a tiger, a chimpanzee and two lions – all pacing restlessly. Ricardo was again tied to a large stake at the center of the yard.\"\"<\/a>Ricardo tried to walk, pulling at his tied leg, but the rope was too thick and strong for him. He cried out and gave another pull, but the more he struggled the tighter the rope around his leg grew. It wounded him, and eventually, he became exhausted.<\/p>\n

A tall man stepped into the yard. He was holding a long black stick with a spike attached to its end. The man approached the new addition to the circus and yelled something incomprehensible at Ricardo. Seeing that his command did not elicit the appropriate response, the man violently struck Ricardo, who let out a quiet moan and took a step backward. Another powerful blow landed on his front leg, followed by another to his trunk. He was frightened and confused. Three more men appeared. They tied his legs tightly with thick ropes, forcing him to helplessly fall prostrate. The man with the stick advanced again. Ricardo tried to resist, to struggle, to cry out – but it was all in vain. The ropes were too strong. With his head and trunk also tied, he become completely immobilized, like a lifeless corps on the ground. The man lifted the spiked stick again and poked it between Ricardo\u2019s toes, the most sensitive spot on his body. The man then passed the stick to one of the others. He took a shorter stick and walked around the paralyzed animal. Every time the short stick touched the large body, it emitted a powerful current, and Ricardo let out a stifled groan. This was repeated again and again, until Ricardo nearly lost consciousness.<\/p>\n

\"10440240_10202778819885268_637134387808106902_n\"<\/a>Gradually, Ricardo\u2019s free, wild spirit was broken. For days he tried to resist, tried to tear away, to run, to kick at his captors, but he could not move because of the ropes. He repeatedly cried for his mother or his herd to come and rescue him, but to no avail. The blows – countless blows – rained down on him day and night, often without provocation. Gradually he realized that it was best not to resist, best to cooperate with his captors, best to surrender. His spirit was broken.<\/p>\n

From then on Ricardo would follow his captors submissively. When the man raised his pointed stick Ricardo would sit on his backside and lift his front legs in the air. Sitting this way was difficult and painful, because his body was not suited to such positions. But when he failed to comply, he was beaten, poked and electrocuted. His whole body ached. Training was painful, but the fear was stronger. When Ricardo finally learned what was expected of him, and after he had managed to perform the first routine perfectly, he was taught to stand on two legs. The fear of torture consumed him. He tried his best to perform the tricks demanded of him. But always, he only got it right after he had been beaten and poked countless times. Some of the exercises were done in a group with the other elephants. They were forced to march in circles, each holding onto the tail of the animal in front of it. Whenever one of the elephants would slow down, a man would step up to him and goad him on by applying a powerful electric current to his rear.<\/p>\n

At the end of each training session, the elephants would be taken back to their narrow cells and chained. They no longer fought to break free. Their spirit was broken at an early age, and they never knew freedom. They would stand in their holding cells, rocking restively in place – demoralized, frightened and hurting. The older elephants bore marks of the repeated beatings, poking and electric shocks. One had a round scar on his forehead, evidence of a powerful electric shock. Another suffered from a leg injury, and could not bend his knee. He remained crippled, carrying his leg behind him as though it were a wooden stump.<\/p>\n

When they led Ricardo down from the truck and chained him, he saw a large colorful tent before him. The animals were washed, painted and covered with flashy trinkets. Come nightfall, a large crowd of people filled the tent. The noise and commotion agitated the waiting animals, who grew more restless than ever. Their trainers, armed with spikes, whips and electric shockers, watched them closely.<\/p>\n

The signal was given, and Ricardo was led by the man with the pointed stick onto the central stage. The crowd whistled, laughed and shouted. The spotlights blinded the frightened Ricardo. But whenever he hesitated he saw the look on the man\u2019s face and his raised pointed stick and dutifully performed the tricks he was so painfully taught. Immediately after exiting the stage, he was led to the back and chained.<\/p>\n

Such were Ricardo’s days at the circus. Except during training sessions and live performances, he was chained by the legs to prevent him from moving. His body gradually gave out. The violent and exhausting training routines weakened him. One day, as he was trying to rise to a stand, his hind legs broke beneath him. He lay sprawled, numb with pain, unable to rise. When his condition failed to improve in the next few hours, he was put down using a lethal injection.<\/p>\n
