We were contacted with an offer from a battery cage farm to come and take 60 egg-laying hens before the entire hen-house population would be electrocuted.
Thanks to your support, we were able to set up a new space for birds on our farm, and these recently-rescued hens were the first to enjoy this little piece of paradise. They left behind a life of slavery in battery cages to start a new life of freedom and love that would last until their dying day.
At the moment of truth, it was heartbreaking to pick the 60 lucky hens we would take with us. The sight of us must have melted the chicken coop manager’s heart, and she let us rescue one more hen.
As they arrived at the farm, we held each and every one of the hens close, named them, trimmed their toenails, and gently placed them all down.
We are never going to forget the surprised look in their eyes as they felt the solid ground underneath them, spread their wings with joy, and took their first-ever dust bath, just as nature intended them to do.
Now they are no longer faceless products in the food industry or the price tag on every omelet – they are Georgia, Shiri, Gaya, Neta, Hadar, and many others, loved members of the freedom family.
